2023.05.20Gotion has announced its self-developed new LMFP system, the “L600 Qichen Battery.”
- The energy density of a single cell is 240Wh/kg, while that of the system is 190Wh/kg.
- The vehicle has a driving range of 1,000 kilometers and supports 18-minute continuous fast charging.
- The simple design significantly reduces the structural components and wiring in the battery pack.
- The self-developed materials can withstand temperatures of 1,200°C and provide active safety protection through the fourth-generation BMS (Battery Management System).
On May 19, Gotion High-tech unveiled its self-developed new LMFP system, the L600 Qichen cell and battery pack, at the 12th Science and Technology Conference. This battery achieved an industry-first driving range of more than 1,000 kilometers without using NCM.
The system has an energy density of 190Wh/kg and can achieve a driving range of 1,000 kilometers.
The presenter was Dr. Cheng Qian, Executive Officer of Gotion High-tech’s international business division. He made an energetic appearance on stage, drawing cheers from the audience. Cheng Qian said, “In recent years, lithium iron phosphate (LFP) technology has been reevaluated by the market, and its market share has continued to expand. Meanwhile, in the mass production of lithium iron phosphate batteries, improvements in energy density have reached a limit, and further improvement requires advances in the chemical system. This led to the emergence of lithium iron phosphate batteries with added manganese.”

Qichen L600 LMFP Cell
“The Qichen L600 LMFP cell achieves a gravimetric energy density of 240Wh/kg and a volumetric energy density of 525Wh/L. It easily passes cycle tests of 4,000 cycles at room temperature and 1,800 cycles at high temperature, and also achieves 18-minute fast charging. With the adoption of the L600 cell, the pack’s volumetric utilization rate reaches 76%, achieving an energy density that exceeds that of current ternary systems, while the system energy density reaches 190Wh/kg. This is because Qichen’s materials have a high energy density, enabling the same approximately 1,000-kilometer driving range without using ternary materials,” said Cheng Qian.

Cheng Qian explained that, after 10 years of research, Gotion High-tech independently developed lithium manganese iron phosphate (LMFP) materials and addressed challenges including manganese dissolution at high temperatures, low conductivity, and low density through a co-precipitation synthesis process, advanced doping and coating technologies, and new particle engineering technologies. Gotion High-tech’s breakthrough in lithium manganese iron phosphate was attributable, on the one hand, to its forward-looking work in the materials field. In 2014, it obtained the “IFP1865140-15Ah New Product Certificate for Prismatic Lithium Manganese Iron Phosphate Ion Batteries.” In 2016, it obtained the “New Product Certificate for Carbon-Composite Lithium Manganese Iron Phosphate Cathode Materials for Lithium-Ion Batteries.” In 2019, Gotion High-tech’s self-developed prismatic lithium manganese iron phosphate lithium-ion battery received the honorary title of “New Product of Anhui Province.” On the other hand, the breakthrough also benefited from its international research perspective. A laboratory in Cleveland, Ohio, USA, developed a new electrolyte compatible with LMFP, significantly improving high-temperature cycling and storage performance. Using its self-developed LMFP materials and electrolyte, Gotion High-tech successfully developed the Qichen L600 cell.

Dr. Cheng Qian made the presentation at the event.
According to Dr. Cheng Qian, this Qichen L600 LMFP cell, which was “born after a decade of arduous efforts,” is scheduled to enter mass production in 2024 according to the company’s plan. The cell achieves 1,800 fast-charging cycles with 18-minute charging and can withstand temperatures of up to 1,200°C by using self-developed high-temperature-resistant materials.
According to Dr. Cheng Qian, the Qichen battery pack manufactured based on this cell incorporates numerous new technologies and innovations. In addition to a new upgrade and innovation in the battery material system, it also features breakthroughs and innovations in various technologies.

First public unveiling of the Qichen battery pack
The Qichen battery pack adopts sandwich-structure double-sided liquid cooling technology and an extremely simplified design approach. The extremely simplified design reduces the number of structural components in the battery pack by 45% and cuts its weight by 32%. In addition, the extremely simple electrical design reduces the length of the battery pack’s wire harnesses to just 26% of the previous length, from 303 meters to 80 meters. The volumetric utilization efficiency reaches 76%, and the pack energy density reaches 190Wh/kg, exceeding the energy density of ternary batteries currently available on the market.
In other words, without using a ternary battery system, Gotion High-tech’s Qichen battery pack achieved an industry-first driving range of 1,000 kilometers and also supports 1,800 fast-charging cycles with 18-minute charging.
In addition, one of the product’s key advantages is safety. The materials used have higher thermal decomposition temperatures than ternary materials, ensuring the intrinsic safety of the materials. The self-developed insulating material can withstand temperatures of up to 1,200°C. By providing the cell with an insulating skin, rapid heat radiation channels under extreme conditions, and a BMS with active safety protection, four layers of extreme safety protection are achieved. The product has currently passed all tests under the new national standard, including nail penetration, thermal chamber, overcharge, over-discharge, overheating, compression, and short-circuit tests.
